Aftermath
Well, the streets are dark and the guests are hopefully safely on their way home. The day was as wonderful as I expected, and then some. I found out many things that I did not know today.
I learned that my sister Dot is a consummate artist. She is fluent in subjects as diverse as Cubist perspectives and editorial processes in publishing. She recognized the Bannock I served from a visit to Ireland and was very complimentary when she thanked us for the Tea.
I learned that my sister Joan went to Santa Fe and loved her stay at a B&B recently. She is still teaching, an amazingly kind and patient person with such a loving way of reminding and correcting. My children truly adore her.
I learned that my soon to be official sister Becky likes the color purple and is very much a movie buff. I'm learning new things about Becky all the time, especially her sense of humor, dry but not caustic. She sees the irony without derision -- quite a trick.
I also realized I knew a lot more than I thought I did. My brothers are very sweet -- not one of them laughed at my attempts at culinary artistry. They appreciated that I remembered the espresso for one, the pumpernickel for another, though I got the Equal and the Sweet and Low mixed up.
I knew my mother would be a perfect help and hostess. She and Edward took over in the very best possible sense. I could not have ever served the meal and still been on my feet at this point without so much help. She was sweet and caring and she noticed that I needed a break even before I did.
And most of all I realized that these people really are my family. I told my husband that this was my only chance at having a family, and that was true enough. But they are the quintessential family. Close knit, loving, attentive and truly interesting.
I hope they feel as lucky as I do right now.
